Robbing a bank? Don't forget to accessorize

071706_hat.jpgThe FBI is looking for help catching a Beau Brummelly robber who's believed to have knocked over four banks in Houston — all while wearing dazzlingly coordinated outfits. The man, who authorities call the "Dapper Bandit," robbed his first bank — a Washington Mutual branch in southwest Houston — on May 31. His M.O. is kind of unusual: He robs the banks in broad daylight, usually in grocery stores where there are plenty of people around, and he brings his own bag to carry the dough in. And then there's the matter of his clothes:

"It's a unique style of hat. It's a Gilligan's or fishermen's style of hat. He wears a different one in each robbery, but each time, they're color-coordinated," FBI Special Agent Shauna Dunlap said.

In his four robberies, the man has sported a black hat to match his black pants, a blue hat matching a blue shirt, a blue-striped hat matching a similar shirt and a khaki hat to match a khaki shirt. We admire his planning and all, but we have to ask: Is a fisherman's hat really the best choice for a bank robbery? If we were dressing up to steal some cash, we think we'd go for a fedora, or perhaps even a jaunty pork pie.

The Bad Hat Bandit is described as between 5 feet, 8 inches and 6 feet tall, between 20 and 30 years old, with a dark complexion, muscular build, goatee and mustache (could it be a fake Van Dyke?). Anyone who knows anything about him should call Crime Stoppers at 713.222.TIPS or the FBI at 713.693.5000.
