Matthew R. McCombs, the teenager who said he shot 16-year-old Ashton Glover out of "morbid curiosity," appeared in a Fort Bend County court this morning and kept quiet while a judge set his bond at $1 million. According to KPRC, McCombs likely won't bond out of jail; KTRK reports he'll be held in the general jail population and won't be isolated.
Though there wasn't much else to report from the courtroom, McCombs' attorney, Ira Chenkin, told reporters he spoke with McCombs for about a half-hour today and that McCombs "feels terrible about what's happened." (We're not sure whether that means he feels terrible about shooting Glover, which he seemed rather nonchalant about at the time — police say he and accomplice Sean Brown went to eat at IHOP between killing Glover and burying her body — or about being caught.) Chenken said jail is the best place for McCombs right now: "He's considered a pariah in this community. His safest place is probably this jail." Brown is being held on a $5 million bond in Michigan, where police caught him and McCombs trying to flee to Canada last week. Brown is awaiting an Aug. 11 extradition hearing.
Glover's mother, Sue Smith, reportedly stood outside the Fort Bend County Jail yesterday trying to get a look at McCombs when he arrived. "I just miss my baby," she told KPRC. "I just want justice to be served. That's all I want."
