News out of Texas City from KPRC: The apartment complex where a man died and another was injured in an explosion yesterday was evacuated this morning so a bomb squad could detonate explosives found in one of the units. The plan was to blow up the material sometime after 1 p.m.:
"We're going to place a small explosive charge next to the product. At the detonation, the heat from that detonation is going to consume the product in whole. It's going to burn it up," said Special Agent Kasey Salway with the FBI. "We're not expecting a large amount of damage."
We're sure that's a relief for nearby residents who display their commemorative plates on their walls.
Salway said the explosive is believed to be peroxide-based and "extremely sensitive to heat, shock and friction," which explains why it wasn't moved out of the apartment. It's still not clear why 21-year-old Matthew Rugo, who was killed in yesterday's explosion, was working with combustible materials in his apartment or what the injured man, Curtis Jetton, was doing there. Texas City and Houston police and the FBI are investigating.
Update: KPRC reports the explosion went off as planned shortly after 1:30: "Live video showed a puff of smoke coming from the apartment and nearby residents said they heard a small blast." All you people looking for the mushroom cloud over Texas City can go back inside now.
