Here's what's on tap this week:
Friday, July 21
The Reliant Park World Series of Dog Shows (no, really) comes to Reliant Park (click for directions). The shows today and tomorrow will culminate in "Best In Show" winners, anf there's lots of other excitement: vendors, exhibitions of canine skill (dog frisbee, for example), and probably some great peoplewatching, too. Tickets are $5-10 at the door, and stuff goes on all day: 8 am to 4 pm.
Saturday, July 22
On Saturdays, the Houston Chess Club offers a free novice class for beginners from 10:30-11:30 AM. They're located at 9000 Southwest Freeway, Suite #290.
Sunday, July 23
Houston has a plethora of Great Books groups, who meet around town to discuss great works of literature. This Sunday, the group that meets at St. Paul's United Methodist Church (5501 Main St. @ Binz) will discuss Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, one of our favorite books, at 3 pm. They meet in Room S-109 (in the basement of the sanctuary building).
Monday, July 24
Freneticore presents a rare staging of 1923's The Adding Machine. Today's performance is pay what you can: the usual ticket price is $10. The play is about a man whose longtime job is outsourced...to a college student with a calculator. So what does he do? Murder his boss, of course! The play is by the celebrated Elmer Rice, and is surprisingly relevant and funny even in 2006. (8pm at Freneticore's performance space, 5102 Navigation).
Tuesday, July 25
See Houston's own WNBA team, the Comets take on the Los Angeles Sparks at 7:30 pm at Toyota Center (1510 Polk St.) Ticket prices are a range, but there are seats avaliable for $8 and $10, as well as $12.
Wednesday, July 26
The Houston Film/Music Swap at the MFAH takes unscored films by local filmmakers--and unfilmed scores by local composers--and brings them together. Filmmaker Michelle Hampton heads up the event for the third year. You can see her pieces and those of others tonight at 7pm, for free. (MFAH, 1001 Bissonnet)
Thursday, July 27
Southmore House's monthly poetry slam will take place tonight (3107 Leland). Perform, or just listen to the talented group of competitors and performers and their spoken word art. 7pm.
