Harrisburg, it is!

072106_harrisburg.jpgMETRO announced yesterday that Harrisburg is the official choice for the east-end line - the only selection to have been made since the red line. Construction is supposed to begin one year from now, with completion in December 2010, and it will initially consist of "train-like buses" that would be turned into rail if the ridership was strong enough (now that's some magic wand!).

Some business owners in the area have voiced conerns, such as construction issues and mobility, but most, like Bob Townley, see it as a needed development for Houston:

"It's going to hurt my business for a while," said Bob Townley, owner of C&R Auto, 5702 Harrisburg. "But I think Harrisburg is the only intelligent way to approach the East End," he said. "I've been 35 years in business in the East End. I think it's going to be good for the city."

Now if only the west-end part of the university corridor issue could come to an agreement! To get in on the action, Metro's site lists meetings and notices - July 24th is the University Corridor Open House (5-8pm) at the Third Ward Multi-Service Center, 3611 Ennis, followed by a second one on the 25th at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 5501 Main St., from 5-8pm.
