Restaurant Review: Ziggy's Healthy Grill

veggies.jpgWhatever shall we do with those crazy vegetarians? Houstonist votes you take them to Ziggy's Healthy Grill, (2202 W. Alabama), where you can get them tipsy on the fantastic pomegranate martini and relax omn the patio. You meateaters can enjoy a variety of burgers (including ostrich and venison as well as the more traditional beef and turkey) grilled to order, which come with french fries, sweetpotato fries, or the best onion rings on the planet (they're thin-sliced and not too batter-covered). The meatloaf (avaliable most popularly in sandwich format) is also superb.

Meanwhile, the veggie-lovers that Ziggy's caters to will be happy with the homemade veggie burgers, savory corn and blackbean chili (with fat free sour cream), spinach and mushroom quesadillas, or veggie loaf: made with lentils and rice as a base, which is also avaliable as a sandwich on toasted foccacia. (We like it as the platter thought--the sanwich is a little drier, and we're big fans of the vegetarian gravy that comes with the platter).

Also worth checking out is Ziggy's brunch--the multigrain belgian waffle is to die for, and good for you too! (Well, better than thew regular kind, anyway.) Get it with a side of organic turkey bacon and sit back to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. The people are friendly and interesting, and you might even meet some nice dogs (Ziggy's gives free biscuits out). It's a lovely way to spend a Sunday morning.

Bottom Line: Bring your veggie friends--or anyone on a diet--for refreshingly healthy, tastily-prepared food in an eclectic atmosphere.

I had a slightly-off buffalo burger a couple of years ago at that place that had me feeling rough the rest of the night. I never returned. That must have been an isolated incident, since they're still in business.
