Houston's Top Bachelorette

072406_ebonyEbony magazine named Houstonian Crystal Brown one of the country’s top bachelorettes. The 34-year-old single mom is the CEO and President of Crystal Clear Communications, a Houston based advertising firm. Brown, who was nominated by someone who is still anonymous, is a long time reader of Ebony:

As a child, she read every book and magazine she could get her hands on. She especially enjoyed Ebony, the glossy monthly that often had pretty pictures of successful black folks dressed up and looking good.

"I'd see the pretty women featured and wished I could be one of those women," Brown said. "When you're a little girl, seeing those kinds of things are important. The women were all successful."

The people at Ebony get hundreds of nominations each year, and they narrow their list looking for women who are attractive, ambitious, talented and educated, which Brown is. She’s a UH graduate who did her senior thesis on the effects of gangsta rap on the male perception of women. Her idea for the paper was originally rejected, but she researched and interviwed her way to approval.
