In true form to his character on Star Trek, the late James Doohan, who played Scotty on the series, will finally get his wish when his ashes will be flown to space in October. Doohan passed away a year ago.
A portion of his ashes, along with about a hundred other people's, will be flown into space by a company located in Houston, Space Services. They call these missions “Memorial Spaceflights,” and they are open up to the general public. So if you’re looking for a different type of memorial service for your loved one, especially if they were a trekkie, this may be the one – if you have the cash. Here are the packages you can choose from:
- Earth Return Service – Spaceflight with return to Earth ($495 - $1,495)
- Earth Orbit Service – Launch into Earth’s orbit ($1,295 - $7,495)
- Luna Service – Launch to lunar orbit or surface ($12,500 - $67,495)
- Voyager Service – Launch into deep space ($12,500 - $67,495)
Unfortunately, the liftoff isn’t based in Houston. October’s flight will be in New Mexico. Oh, in case you're wondering, the Doohan family chose the newest, and most economical package, the Earth Return Service.
