Rain, Day 3

072706_highwater.jpgDid we say it was going to rain a lot yesterday? Well, depending on where you live, it did: It was just wet and icky inside the Loop, but things got pretty crazy on the west side, we hear. And it may not be over yet: Harris County and southeast Texas remain under a flood watch this morning, and if storms move slowly through the area, isolated areas could get another 6 to 8 inches. But there's good news — the storm system is on its way out and is expected to head off toward North and Northeast Texas by late afternoon. After the rain, expect a chance of showers through the weekend, with temperatures climbing back into the 90s. Ah, summer.

On Wednesday, the heaviest rainfall in Harris County was in the southeast and southwest sections, where between 4 and 6 inches fell. But that was nothing compared with Liberty County, which had nearly 8 inches, and Matagorda County, which recorded almost 10 inches. The storm system is the result of a surge of tropical moisture that came ashore near Brownsville on Tuesday; though the system wasn't a tropical storm, it acted kind of like one, dumping a lot of rain from South Texas to western Louisiana.

As a side note, the Chronicle found at least one guy who was really enjoying yesterday's rain: Michael Woodward, who was standing beside the Beltway feeder road near the Katy Freeway videotaping cars trying to get through floodwaters. "I'm from Salt Lake City, Utah, so this is all new to me," Woodward told the Chron. "It's something to write home about, I guess." Yeah, the folks back in SLC should get a real kick out of the dumb Texans who think their Miatas can make it across raging floodwaters — we know we do!
