If you've recently been dumped by someone who told you, "It's not you," well, take heart: Maybe it's really not you. Maybe it's the city you live in.
Forbes has released its list of Best Cities for Singles 2006, and Houston ranks a rather lonely 34th out of 40, a sharp drop from last year's ranking at No. 17. You know what that means? That means Milwaukee, Sacramento and Detroit are all more happenin' places for singles than the Bayou City. If that doesn't kill your dating hopes, we don't know what will.
Forbes ranked cities on seven criteria: job growth, the cost of living along, culture, nightlife, the number of singles, the online dating scene and "coolness." Though Houston did well in some categories — we were fifth-best in cost of living, 24th in the number of singles and 25th in coolness, we tanked in online dating (37th), nightlife (39th) and culture (40th). Keep in mind that 40th place is last place and you'll see what a cultural wasteland Forbes thinks we live in. (Check out their methodology if you want to know the details.)
If you wondered, the top 10 singles cities were, in order: Denver, Boston, Phoenix, San Francisco, New York, Raleigh-Durham, Seattle, Austin, Washington and Miami. Check out the complete rankings here.
