Chase memento auction rolls again

073106_tire.jpgWe guess Don Bauer's fund-raising effort for the Pasadena police department couldn't have had better publicity if he'd paid for it. Bauer, remember, is the guy who put an errant tire from a July 21 police chase on eBay, hoping to raise money to help Pasadena police pay for repairs to cruisers that were damaged in the chase. Things rocked along until Friday, when eBay pulled the listing, saying it violated company policy on charity sales. But then eBay changed its mind, meaning the auction can continue.

And so you can still bid on the tire, which apparently flew off Kenneth Ray Pool's truck as Pool drove up a concrete embankment near Fairmont Parkway and the Beltway. It's a Uniroyal LT 285 / 75R16, but you should know that the tire isn't in great shape: It has holes in it, and one of the police spike strips used to stop Pool is still embedded in the tread. As Bauer says in the eBay listing:

This tire is not functional! Unless you plan on using it as a really bad tire swing (I would not even recommend that). It has more holes in it than just the two where the rim goes and half the tread is missing.

The auction will end at about 6:30 p.m. Friday. Bidding on the tire is already up to $780; all proceeds from the sale will be donated to Pasadena police.
