SWAT officers shot an armed man at a Hobby Airport-area motel last night after a nearly three-hour standoff that involved threats and a female hostage. It started at about 10:30 p.m. when police got a tip that the man, wanted on suspicion of armed robbery, was at the Motel 6 in the 8800 block of West Airport. Cops showed up at the motel, knocked on the man's door and got threatened:
"Those officers and supervisors came to this location, knocked on the door and were met by an individual who brandished both a pistol and a shotgun and demanded that they leave," said Sgt. David Crain with the Houston Police Department. "He was holding a female hostage."
SWAT officers arrived by 11:20 p.m. and began a two-hour negotiation with the man that ended with his releasing the hostage. According to KHOU, the man then began threatening to commit suicide; when he finally came out of the motel room shortly after 2 a.m., he pointed two weapons at the police and thee officers shot at him, hitting him twice. "He turned and faced a position where some SWAT officers were located, putting their lives in jeopardy. That's when they protected themselves by returning fire," Crain told KPRC.
The suspect was taken to Ben Taub, where he's in stable condition; police are investigating to find out whether he was linked to several armed robberies in the area. "He does have a lengthly criminal history," Crain told Channel 11. "He's facing felony possession of a firearm charges at a minimum, and then the robbery investigations, they will further spell out what his involvement has been."
