Comcast replacing Time Warner in Houston

Yesterday, reporters received early word that Time Warner will be leaving the Houston market and Comcast will take over the operations locally. The official announcement happens today. The news came from an internal e-mail at Time Warner.

What does this mean for Houstonians? We’ll know more later as time goes on. But we compared rates with a city that has Comcast, Boston. Here, Time Warner charges $48 for standard digital cable service; in Boston, Comcast charges $59. High speed Internet service is $53 in Boston; Road Runner is $40 here. Of course, this doesn’t mean that Comcast won’t match the market value of the services in our area.

If you’re a professional football fan, the switch could be good. Comcast offers the NFL Network, a channel that Time Warner would never add to their line-up. As for what channels will be leaving our airwaves, we’re not sure.

Comcast customers in Dallas just got word yesterday that their service will switch to Time Warner. This swapping is due to Comcast and Time Warner’s purchase of Adelphia and deals the two companies made eons ago.

The switch won’t happen until 2007. Stay tuned for more details.
