Friday, August 4
Noisefest 2006: Metal acts from the Houston area. At $8 a day, beginnig today at 6 and tomorrow at 5 pm, the price is right to come headbang and enjoy some upandcoming acts. You saw them before they were famous--and you've got the hearing damage to prove it! (3108 Leland)

Saturday, August 5
Drive out to Stafford to listen to Irwin Tang, who's known for battling Shaq over racial etiquette, read from his most recent book, his first fiction collection. Tang's reading is free and the stories are all about his transformation forn nerdy Asian kid into what he is today. (Borders, 12778 Fountain Lake Circle, Stafford)

Sunday, August 6
Head down to Kemah for the the 38th Annual Blessing of the Fleet. Hang out on the deck of the Cadillac Authentic Mexican Restaurant with a margarita, and watch the various boats, all decorated, file by. Schedule is here, parade of boats begins at 2. Drink a margarita for us! (Kemah Boardwalk, Bradford and Second St. in Kemah)

Monday, August 7
The El Orbits have long been a fixture at the Continental Club (3700 Main St.), covering Bennet and Sinatra and other standards. Come dance and eat the complimentary soul-food buffet! Free.

Tuesday, August 8
Anyone read slashdot? (The site is a must for any computer geek and all about computer-related stuff, with a slant toward Linux/OpenSource). The Houston slashdot community is heaving a meetup today at Star Pizza (2111 Norfolk) at 7 pm. Come get your geek on!

Wednesday, August 9
McGonnigal's Mucky Duck (2425 Norfolk) is one of our favorite local dives, and tonight the pub hosts an Irish Music Session. It's a family friendly event and a great introduction to Irish arts and culture. There's no cover, and music will begin at 8 pm.

Thursday, August 10
The "random but cool" prize this week goes to the Frutezia Fresh Style at Your Fingertips show at Diverseworks (1117 East Freeway). A travelling display of the best and most creative in nailart, they'll host a closing reception today thats free for ages 21 and up. RSVP by emailing. There'll be a DJ, complimentary nail art, and finger food and drinks.
