Texas EquuSearch founder Tim Miller's daughter Laura was killed 22 years ago, one of four young women whose bodies were found in the so-called "Killing Fields" along I-45 near Calder Road in League City. None of the murder cases were ever solved, and it was Laura's killing that helped prompt Tim Miller to form Equusearch in 2000 (for the full story, read a profile of Miller and Equusearch from the Crime Library). So imagine Miller's surprise when he recently received a letter that could be from Laura's killer. KTRK has the story:
Miller read part of the letter to us."Tim Miller, boo," he read. "It's me you're looking for, but I'm the last man your Laura saw and many more."
They are chilling words delivered in the style of a ransom note.
"Oh my God," said Miller. "I couldn't believe it."
What's odd about the note, apart from its contents, are a couple of details: The return address on the envelope is Corvette Concepts, the location of a still-unsolved 1983 triple murder. There's also an upside-down cross on the letter, which Miller thinks might be a reference to an actual cross placed at the site where Laura's body was found — just after he got the letter, Miller visited the site and found the cross broken. He also found two pornographic videos nearby, one of them featuring 16-year-old girls; Laura was 16 when she was killed.
Unfortunately, police weren't able to get any clues, forensic or otherwise, from the letter, so there's still a good chance someone's just playing a mean-spirited joke on Miller. But he's anxious to find out: "Send me another letter," Miller said. "Give me a call. Meet with me." We'll see.
