Yeah, but when will we reach 25 million crashes?

We'll bet you can't guess what's special about today. No, really, just try to guess. Anything? Oh — why, yes, it is U.S. Coast Guard Day, as a matter of fact. But that's not what we're talking about here.

No, today is special because at some point during the day, MetroRail will have its 25 millionth boarding. It seems like just yesterday that Metro celebrated its 20 millionth boarding (it actually happened on Feb. 27). That means MetroRail has averaged about 31,645 boardings a day since the end of February — not bad. Of course, you have to keep in mind that a boarding isn't necessarily the same as a rider. For example, if one person rides MetroRail to work in the morning and home in the evening, that counts as two boardings, though they were both from just one passenger. The average is still enough to impress Metro brass, who apparently don't bother with the distinction between riders and boardings:

"We're now averaging about one million riders a month on METRORail," said Frank Wilson, METRO President and CEO. "For a line that is just 7.5 miles long that's an impressive number in any transit ledger."

Unfortunately, Metro seems to have no plans to herald the 25 millionth rider like it did the 20 millionth, with giveaways and appearances by the Texans cheerleaders. We guess we'll have to wait for 30 million before we see that kind of excitement again.
