Crafty thieves destroy store to steal money, smokes

080706_newport.jpgIn a confusingly disproportionate act, unknown robbers crashed what was apparently a large truck through the front of a southwest Houston convenience store, then stole about $400 and some cigarettes. Seriously, folks, wouldn't picking a lock have worked about as well?

It happened at Waddell's Food Store; when owner Gan Baloch arrived at 7 a.m. Saturday, he found the front of the store demolished and $400 in cash, some change and the store's entire stock of Newport cigarettes. "Alarm company didn't call me. Nobody called me," Baloch told KTRK said. "So it happened in between 5 a.m. to 6 a.m."

Neighbor Tina Roberts, who said she and her kids are fans of Waddell's, noted that the thieves might be in for a divine come-uppance: "We might not know who do it, but God knows who the person is," she told Channel 13. For now, God hasn't pointed the finger at anyone, which leaves police reviewing surveillance tapes. Shouldn't be too hard to find the suspects, though, we'd think — it seems subtlety isn't really their strong suit.
