About 300 Pit Bulls from a single home in Liberty County are being seized today. The home is the location of a suspected dog fighting ring, and also the site of a fatal home invasion.
The dogs, who have to go into individual crates so as not to try and kill one another, are going to be brought to the Humane Society location Almeda Road.
During the course of the investigation, Liberty County officials found 250 to 300 pit bulls being bred on the property. They also found shipping documents, suggesting the animals were bred and then sent all over the country -- possibly for illegal fighting. There is no evidence any pit bull fighting was happening on this property, but Humane Society officers say there are 75 pups in chicken type coops. The rest are chained to ground spikes, living in standing water and their own waste.
As for the fatal home invasion, which lead to the death of 27-year-old Thomas Weigner, it’s believed that it is somehow involving the dogs. Depending on the bloodlines, all of the dogs on the property could be worth as much as $1 million.
The Humane Society is asking for donations to help with the cost of medical care and other expenses for the dogs.
