Man shot during argument over dog

080806_shihtzu.jpgHere's one you don't hear about every day: In Sugar Land yesterday, a woman reportedly shot her estranged husband during an argument over who would get custody of their dog. It happened just after noon in the 1700 block of Country Club when Adam Birkenheuer showed up at Cynthia Weinheimer's house and tried to take their Shih Tzu. He ended up getting shot in the leg and was Life Flighted to Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Birkenheuer, 62, filed for divorce from Weinheimer, 56, in January, according to court records. It's not clear how the argument went as it led up to the shooting, but footage from KHOU's helicopter showed the result: a red Mercedes convertible parked in Weinheimer's driveway with an empty pet carrier sitting nearby. Hey, you've gotta show something on TV, right?

Police took Weinheimer into custody at the scene. She promptly fainted, so she was taken to the hospital for a checkup. She faces an aggravated assault charge.

And last, but not least: The Shih Tzu wasn't hurt.
