We were kind of surprised to read about Houston's 170th birthday party, which will be held downtown this evening — not that Houston doesn't deserve a birthday bash, but we've always heard the city's real birthday was Aug. 30, 1836, the day the Allen brothers opened Houston up for development with a series of, um, optimistic newspaper ads. So the city is celebrating its birthday a week early? Well, whatever.
More important to most people, we guess, is what's going to happen at the party. There's no word on whether there'll be a cake with 170 candles (and enough pieces for everyone in town, we're sure), but there will be new inductions into the Houston Hall of Fame, including homegrown rockers ZZ Top, Waukesha-Pearce Industries Chairman Louis M. Pearce Jr., developer Ed Wulfe and philanthropists and art collectors John and Dominique de Menil.
The party kicks off at 6 p.m. at the Wortham Center. Be sure to bring a gift.
