Fun For A Hamilton: August 25-31

060906_tenner.jpgThe great thing about being a grown up is that summer fun doesn't have to end at back to school. And since it still feels like summer anyway, have some summer fun, student style: (By which we mean costing as little as possible).

Friday, August 25
Every summer, Theater Suburbia does what they call an "old-fashioned summer 'mellerdrammer'". Come boo the villain and cheer for the hero and the maiden fair in this year's offering, The Girl in the Tutu. (We feel this whole proceeding is somewhat tongue in cheek, perhaps?). At their performance space, (1410 W. 43rd St.) @ 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $10, unless you're a senior or a student. ($9 for them).

Saturday, August 26
The Houston Ebony Opera Guild presents their annual free performance of a well-loved classic opera. This year's is an English-language production of Carmen. The cast includes tons of local talent, and the performance is free, though tickets are required to sit in some of the covered seating areas. The Theater District downtown will have it's 13 annual Open House today. It begins @ noon. Park in the Theater District garage and wander the streets!

Poor juvie kids. Though they'll soon have a series on MTV, nobody asks them how they feel--so they put it in art work. Come see the oddly haunting products of art classes for juvenile offenders. The exhibit, "Artwork of Juvenile Offenders" opens today at Space 125 Gallary (3201 Allen Parkway). Free.

Tuesday, August 29
The students at HSPVA are a talented bunch: here's an art exhibit to prove it. All the works are by current students, and you'd better hurry: it closes today. It's free and at tthe Jung Center of Houston (5200 Montrose)

The Houston Press and Pub Fiction bring you (for free!) Bob Schneider in concert. Scheneider's played everything from funk to punk, and has been around the Austin scene for years but doesn't play Houston very often. He's been compared to a mix between Paul Simon and Neil Young (click that link, his site's cool) , with the sensibillity of Beck. Houstonist'll be at this one, but leave the kids at home. It's 21 plus. Pub Fiction (2303 Smith). Doors open @ 4.

Thursday, August 31
The Houston Blues Society's monthly jam allows you to hear some of the region's finest jazz and blues ucisians for free, sitting in with a different host band each month. This outpuring of creativity is at the Big Easy (5731 Kirby) from 9 pm to closing time. Keep the blues alive!
