Have we been remiss, or what? …Promising burger information – working diligently toward that end – only to be distracted by the holiday. We do apologize for the burger review delay. Houstonist was unpleasantly surprised by a recent trip to Jax Grill in Bellaire – shocked, actually. We got our bacon cheeseburger and rings – the ole usual. The burger was juicy but over-grilled upon arrival and cooled to downright dry meat with a crunchy and over-grilled exterior. The onion rings were over-battered and under-cooked - another not so good combination. The meal was passable – not to be used when considering a full review of the establishment. Our previous experiences involving both the Bellaire and the S. Shepherd locations have been extremely delightful – this trip was an obvious aberration.
Jax Grill has an extensive menu with daily specials, soups, salads, sandwiches, entree's - even the pickiest of eater's should be sated Typically the service is prompt the food quality exceptional – we highly, highly recommend the chicken fried steak and the chicken fried chicken (smothered in cream gravy – cream gravy on the mashed potatoes). It is truly like “buttah”. The pecan-crusted fish (catfish or the catch of the day) is amazing. The setting is casual/walk-up with self-serve beverages (we love the tub of ice cold beer – conveniently located at the register in Bellaire). Both locations have a clean Cajun-café feel - furnished with light wood tables and chairs, the flooring is no-fuss concrete and there are outside patios for those nice evenings we hope to see more of as Fummer gets into full swing (much of the nation is experiencing Fall – Houstonist just sees slight decreases in temperature-making the out-of-doors more palatable – hence – Fummer).
Friday nights at the S. Shepherd location bring live zydeco and dancing on the patio and the admission is free. We suggest you give Jax a try a little early on a Friday evening and then claim your spot on the patio (or dine outside – weather permitting) and get your zydeco on. Always a fun time – but space and parking can get scarce as the night progresses.
Bottom Line: Though our burger adventure was somewhat disappointing, Jax is definitely worth a try – especially if you are craving a CFS (that’s Chicken Fried Steak, ya’ll), typical Cajun-fare or seafood. Friday night zydeco is a great evening out with friends or good, inexpensive entertainment for “out-of-towners”. Casual atmosphere - moderately priced - worth repeat trips.
