Acres Homes murders scare prostitutes

090706_prostitute.jpgSo we figured people in Acres Homes, and maybe in other neighborhoods, would be nervous about the potential serial killer(s) who has murdered six women. But KHOU reports on a segment of the population we didn't really think about: prostitutes. Seems they're afraid, too — so much so that some are considering career changes.

Fifth Ward is miles away from Acres Home. But it was close enough for Tiffani Drakes, 24, to still be afraid.

“He could be over here one minute and way on the Southside in 15 or 20 minutes,” said Drakes.

She spent eight years hustling the streets to provide for her three kids.

But she stopped, in part out of fear she may become a victim of the serial killer.

“I watched for him. I looked around. I was real careful, looking at people’s arm, let me see, let me see. I want to know who I’m getting in the car with,” said Drakes who is now a student.

Turns out more former hookers than the ones worried about the Acres Homes killer are getting out of the business: Channel 11 talked to Cathryn Griffin-Townsend, who runs a program called Been There Done That to help ex-prostitutes start new lives. "Having the serial killer come out with such publicity brought [the fear] to the surface," Grrifin-Townsend said, explaining that calls to her service have more than doubled since the news of the killings hit.

So prostitution is a dangerous business, eh? Who knew?
