There was a long weekend, you see. Consquently, we woke up on Thursday, though it was Wedneday, and you were left last night bereft, unable to figure out the best thing to do with your ten dollars. Remind us when it's Thursday next time, y'all.
Friday, September 8
Since the sad demise of Actor's Theatre of Houston, our theatre scene's been missing something around here: now maybe we've gotten it back. Pendulum Theatre's first production opens tonight: the company's founder says that the group plans on showing us plays "no one else in the city would think of doing." Hurrah for that. Tonight's offering is Rebecca Gilman's Boy Gets Girl $10. 8 pm @ Midtown Arts Center (1423 Holman)
Saturday, September 9
Come watch some very different cheap theatricals in the name of Art tonight. For one night only, Superwoman vs. the League of Evil, the first play written by Alex Wukman of the Houston Press staff, will play at Commerce Street Artists Wharehouse (2315 Commerce). Pay what you can--the point is to raise funds for a a fuller production, and it features HSPVA and NYU alum Sarah Purdy in the title role.
Sunday, September 10
KPFT sponsers a concert of world music at Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park, beginning at 4 pm. It's free, but you can pick up tickets for the covered seats at the box office the morning of the show @ 11. The music is mostly South American, with devotional songs and jazz taking equal part. Fun!
Monday, September 11
If you can get away during the work day, come to Rice University's Shepherd School of Music to hear the Rice Chorale sing the Faure Requiem at noon. Every year the chorus, under the baton of noted local musician and educator Tom Jaber, sings a different requiem (funeral mass) as a 9/11/2001 memorial. Journalistic integrity forces us to disclose that we're taking part in this one, but we'd tell you to come anyway: it's a beautiful piece of music. Free.
Tuesday, September 12
CraftHouston 2006 is at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (4848 Main St.). Come see what locval artisans have done with basic materials this year--ceramix, metal, wax, cloth...maybe you'll see something you want to take home! It's free and open from 10-5.
Wednesday, September 13
Cool, but a little odd: Central Market has a scavenger hunt!! It's avaliable beginning at 9 AM each Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and takes you on a delicious tour of the store. While you're there, pick up something for lunch. You can download the questions here.
Thursday, September 14
So you couldn't get tickets to see Mariah Carey? Feel like a super-sophisticate at the MFAH(1001 Bissonnet) instead, where you can hear Dr. Peter Bondanella speak about noted film director Federico Fellini as part of the museum's Artful Thursdays program. It's at 6 pm, and free, and is presented in conjunction with the museum's Fellini film festival. And think how cool you'll be able to sound in the office on Monday....
