State senator gets some scary sugar

091206_jackson.jpgState Sen. Mike Jackson's League City office had something of a 9/11 scare yesterday when one worker opened a letter that contained a white, powdery substance. The immediate thought was, of course, anthrax (no, not that one), and the office was evacuated.

Lamoin Scott, Jackson's League City district director, opened the letter and read a portion of it, which he said was about something the writer had asked Jackson to do but had not seen any action on. He called Jackson, who told Scott to call the police and evacuate — which wasn't all that hard, since Scott is the only person who works in the office. "Obviously, with today being 9-11, we're all aware of what happened and first thing that comes to mind is that somebody sent something toxic in the mail," Jackson told the Chronicle.

Fortunately, the substance in the envelope was sugar, not anthrax. Jackson said he didn't know why someone would want to scare him that way; it's not clear yet where the letter, which had a Lubbock postmark, came from. The sugary substance was sent to a lab for further testing, and the letter is being investigated.
