Houstonist Bites: Guy's Meat Market

Houstonist made a botched burger attempt this past weekend at Guy's Meat Market. At first - we were sorely disappointed to learn that you can only get one of Guy's smoked burgers Tuesday - Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. (or - until they are gone). Rats. Well - that's a frenzied drive from work in the making - just to try one of the burgers billed as "one of the best".

The trip was absolutely not wasted. Weekends are dedicated to barbecue. We opted for a sliced beef sandwich (to go - there are no places to sit - cash and carry) which was other worldly - in that most brisket is mundane - this was falling apart and perfectly smoked. Order the pickles, onion and sauce on the side - if for no other reason - the employee at the steam table will ask "Right side? or Left side". We love food with attitude and wit - it just improves the overall experience.

In business since 1938 - Guy's boasts a nice array of fresh meats, many cut to order (including a beautiful slab of our favorite - bacon). Also, in the freezer case are cajun boneless stuffed chickens, vacuum-packed cooked burgers (there is hope), freshly-frozen cut meats and Guy's homemade pan sausage (that's on our list of must-buy meats) and much more.

Bottom Line: The sliced beef sandwich was fabulous - tender; tasty and Guy's doesn't skimp on the beef - at $3.40 (plus tax, title and license) it is a deal. Sides are ordered a la carte at $0.85/order for baked beans, potato salad or macaroni salad. Very friendly service - with a sense of humor. Houstonist will go back (this was some of the better barbecue our fair city has to offer - non-rodeo season).
