Bank robber chooses unfortunate getaway vehicle

092206_bike.jpgWe know criminals, in general, aren't always the smartest people out there — hey, when you're trying to plan a crime of some kind, the pressure must be such that it's kind of hard to make really good decisions. That's the only explanation we can think of for the guy who robbed a Baytown bank yesterday and then made an unfortunate choice of getaway vehicles: a bicycle.

Police said the man stole an undisclosed amount of money from a Chase bank late yesterday morning, then furiously pedaled away on his getaway bike. As you might expect, it didn't take the cops long to catch up with him:

"I think he just parked [the bike] outside the bank," said Captain Roger Clifford with the Baytown Police Department. "He absolutely got on a bicycle and rode away. We were looking for an individual on a bicycle and he just happened to be coming down these railroad tracks when the officers spotted him."

There's no word on whether the guy had stowed the stolen cash in the bicycle's basket.

We suppose we can look at this incident as an example of making the most of what you have — not everyone, after all, can get their hands on a fancy getaway car. But if you decide to do something illegal, remember: It's probably a good idea to flee the scene in a vehicle that might actually go faster than a police car. Just a thought.
