R.I.P.: Gallant Knight

Tonight's the night - the last night of the Gallant Knight, unfortunately. Houstonist has scrounged for parking, queued up for cocktails and, most importantly, shaken our money-maker at the coolest little dive bar in town. Alas and alack, 'twill come to a screeching halt at the close of business this evening — or so we hear from the Chronicle.

It is truly a sad day as developers continue wreaking havoc on landmarks and some of our coolest places to hang, all in the name of dumbing down the inner city and bringing the suburbs inside the loop. OK, we admit the joint was sort of junky — that was the allure. But it was also the funky/cool fabulousness that made the Gallant Knight what it is/was.

Grab your friends, think about carpooling and head to the Gallant Knight to pay your final respects to one of the coolest blues/funk/jazz/soul bars Houston has ever known. It is a "school night" — but hey, it's the last dance for the Gallant.

This is a sad day. I loved going there waaay too much and everyone knew where to find me come midnight on a Saturday night. I played harmonica with Sammy for years each Saturday and was able to live out the rock star wanna be through the Gallant Knight - it will be missed....

It'll be a sad day in Houston when everyone wakes up one day and realizes every landmark we treasured is gone, replaced by condos and corporate food franchises.
