Even though he’s been recording for almost 30 years, most people don’t know who Daniel Johnston is. His profile was lifted a couple of years ago with the release of a tribute album, with artists like Beck, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes and Tom Waits covering his songs. The following year, a documentary of his life won an award at the Sundance festival. This year, Houston’s Infernal Bridegroom Productions created and performed a rock opera based on his music.
None of the above has pushed Johnston into stardom, though. His music is definitely an acquired taste – he writes very surreal and intimate songs that can’t be defined easily in one music category. His struggle with bipolar disorder has helped him with his creativity (his art talent goes beyond music), but it has also hindered him, too.
His performance at the Orange Show will be an intimate showcase of his artwork – both musically and with paint. The Orange Show venue (near the main UH campus) is a one-of-a-kind venue and folk-art museum that should be the perfect place to experience Johnston’s work.
