If there's one thing Houstonist has learned in all our years of sweet life, it's this: When you've done something wrong, it's better to 'fess up to it than to cause more trouble and get yourself in an even bigger mess. But obviously not everyone has figured that out — take, for example, the Waltrip High School student who reportedly assaulted a deputy who was trying to give her a ticket for truancy yesterday.
It happened when Harris County Precinct 6 Deputy Lillian Lozano was called to the attendance office at Waltrip to issue a citation to Rosibel Ramos, the mother of a student who had been absent without permission. According to KTRK, Ramos refused to sign the citation, Lozano placed her in custody and all hell broke loose: Ramos, her daughter and Sandra Cruz, a family friend, attacked Lozano, an HISD police officer and a school administrator. Lt. Antonio Nichols with the Precinct 6 constable's office said the student punched Lozano in the eye, and HISD spokesman Terry Abbott said the school district officer was bitten on the hand (though he didn't say by whom). The whole incident was a surprise, Abbott told Channel 13:
"You don't normally see something like that happen," said HISD spokesperson Terry Abbott. "Occasionally, we'll get an aggravated or antagonist parent who will come to a school, but most of our parents are good folks who are up there with their kids every day."
Lozano was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital for observation; Ramos, Cruz and the student were all charged with felony assault of a peace officer, and the student was also charged with assaulting a school employee, a Class A misdemeanor.
