Houston Man Cycling Across America

100406_georgemendes.jpgToday may be just another a day riding ye ole Herman Miller chair in the cube for Houstonist, but for George Mendes, it marked his 25th day in the saddle of "Tour de Isidro."

Named for Mendes' father, a prostate cancer patient, the tour launched on September 10th from St. Augustine, FL and will encompass "eight States, four mountain ranges, two deserts, and four time zones to cross the US from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific." This leg of the trip started Monday in The Woodlands (Mendes' hometown) and winds through Independence, Bastrop and Wimberly before concluding with a break in Del Rio if all goes according to schedule.

"There is an obligation owed to the cancer community to honor those that came before us by continuing the fight to rid our society of this disease and tirelessly persist until a cure is found," writes Mendes on his Tour de Isidro blog. George is doing his part on the bike and off. While in the saddle, he's braved 10 rainstorms, eluded 46 dogs and dodged 79 roadkills. Donations continue to mount from colleagues, friends and folks he's encountered during his trip. To date, he has raised over $17,000 the Lance Armstrong Foundation's Grassroots Fundraising program in support of the ride, the expenses of which Mendes is paying for himself.

Keep up the good work, George. And, watch out for dillos.
