When Houstonist was in the third grade, we didn't really know the finer points of handling contraband at school — then again, the stuff we sneaked in back then mainly consisted of candy bars and Garbage Pail Kids cards. We certainly never took a grenade to school (probably because we never had the chance to), and if we had, we'd like to think we would have been savvy enough not to show it to our teacher. But who knows? We might have been just like the 8-year-old kid who is in trouble for bringing a disarmed grenade to school yesterday.
According to KTRK, the Kate Bell Elementary student reportedly took the grenade to school yesterday morning and showed it off to a teacher, who confiscated it and reported the incident. The Chronicle's version is a little different: It reports that the grenade was in the kid's backpack and was confiscated by an HISD police officer. Either way, not such a great situation.
It's not as though anyone was in danger — Channel 13 reports the grenade had been gutted and sold through a surplus store, so it couldn't have gone off, but still, it's never a good idea to carry a bomb of any kind to school. The student, who is believed to have gotten the grenade from a relative, has been sent to alternative school, where we're sure he'll learn a lot about unfortunate decisions.
