Houstonist Bites: Cafe Express

A recent venture to our closest Cafe Express resulted in our sampling the Bleu Cheese Bacon Burger, to which we added avocado (nice addition and enough to share with our lunch companion). Albeit we are not fond of chains, Cafe Express has never let us down for quality and quantity - it is pricey-ish, however. Falling into our "gucci burger" category, along with Pappa's Burgers, but also worth the price, is this particular specimen. Large, juicy and cooked to perfection with just the right amount of bleu cheese to send us running for the gum aisle at the closest convenience store. Paired with fries and a large glass of delicious black currant iced tea, this is a lunchtime treat. This burger rivals our other favorite from Cafe Express, the Grilled Chicken and Pasta Pesto Deli Salad - decisions, decisions.

Never a bad choice for a quick high-quality meal, Cafe Express has a lovely variety of sandwiches, burgers, soups and entrees. We like the Roasted Vegetable Tart and the Chicken Rustica Sandwich, also. For dinner, the wine list is somewhat small, but a very decent value. A dinner for two while sharing a bottle of wine is very reasonably priced. Ok - we know it is not exactly romantic to have a plastic buzzer dance on the table when dinner is ready - so not for the first date. For an added bonus, go to the Cafe Express on Kirby and wander into Dessert Gallery, if you have any room left for something sweet afterward.

Bottom Line: Cafe Express makes a mean burger with ample bleu cheese and nice, thick bacon. A trip to the condiment bar and you have all the pickle wedges your heart desires. The black current iced tea is very good, we recommend asking for a to-go cup at the counter. Houstonist will be getting our burger on at Cafe Express, when we are "in the chips", otherwise, it's off to the Mom & Pop shops for about half the price.
