Tuesday
A good night for the acoustic-minded. The San Francisco Bay Guardian claims that if you were to combine Iron and Wine with Elliott Smith, you’d get Meric Long / Dodo Bird. Throw in some Wilco-styled vocals in there, and whammo – you have a great band.
8 p.m. at The Proletariat | tickets and info

Like any serious, country-leaning singer/songwriter, Robbie Fulks has a bone to pick with Nashville, but it doesn’t consume him. Houstonist saw Fulks performance at the Duck last year, and enjoyed his story-telling style and humor. You will, too. The Bad LiversDanny Barnes joins him on stage tonight.
8 p.m. at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck | tickets and info

Wednesday
Idaho may be known for their potatoes, but prefer their Built To Spill. The rock band has been around for almost 15 years, but their profile has never been higher than now, with this year’s You In Reverse. We’re happy that the band that inspired Modest Mouse is making their way back to Texas.
8 p.m. at Warehouse Live | tickets and info

Another band who lists Built To Spill as an influence is Houston’s own Motion Turns It On (it sucks that they play on the same night – decisions, decisions). No vocals here, all spacey instrumental pieces. Expect a good stage show from the band members, too.
8 p.m. at Super Happy Fun Land | tickets and info

Thursday

Huntington Beach’s Hellogoodbye has been playing infectious pop for five years, but didn’t receive any national attention until last year’s SXSW performance and inclusion in The Real World: Austin. We’re glad they’re getting recognition – great throwback indie-pop!
7 p.m. at Numbers | tickets and info

Friday
Louisiana’s Cowboy Mouth returns to Houston to start off you’re weekend with a party. “Are you with me?” We caught them earlier this year at Fitz and enjoyed it. If there’s one band that could make the roof collapse there (not totally unimaginable), it would be them. And yes, they will play “Jenny Says,” don’t worry.
8 p.m. at Fitzgerald’s | tickets and info

Saturday
From Jacksonville, Fla., Mofro sounds like they very well could have been from Mississippi or Memphis. Laid-back blues mixed with southern rock, perfect for drowning your sorrows. The Greyhounds open.
8 p.m. at the Meridian | tickets and info

Antigone Rising was the first band to be heavily promoted in Starbucks' Hear Music series. Last year, their CD’s were sold in the coffee shops around the country, their music was played non-stop in the stores and on satellite radio. While they still aren’t household names, the female pop/folk band gained a much wider audience than ever before.
8 p.m. at the Engine Room | tickets and info
