Katy high school student shoots self

101806_sevenlakes.jpgSad news from Katy: During lunch yesterday, a sophomore at Seven Lakes High School walked outside the school building and shot himself. The 16-year-old had a pulse when he was found, but he died at Memorial Hermann Hospital, KHOU reported. What's not known is why the boy shot himself — officials said a note was found near his body, but its contents haven't been released yet. Meanwhile, there are rumors, according to KTRK:

Worried moms and dads wondered if the shooting could be related to rumors that circulated at the school last week that a school shooting was going to happen on Friday the 13th. That didn't occur and for right now, they're just glad their kids are alright.

"Am I bringing her to school tomorrow? I don't know. I kept her out Friday the 13th," said parent Jody Lassek. "I don't take this stuff lightly."

The school was placed on lockdown after the incident, and students were sent home beginning at 1:45 p.m. — about 50 minutes early. It's not clear how the student managed to get the gun on campus, and that has some people concerned: "It makes me very scared that someone could even take a gun in the school, much less use it," parent Sandra Enlich told Channel 13. "How did he get the gun in the school? That's what worries me."

Classes will be held as usual today, with extra security and grief counselors at the Seven Lakes campus.
