Fun For A Hamilton: October 20-26

We could tell you a horror story about why your favorite ten dollar bill has been missing from your lives lately, but merely rest assured that Hamilton's back now. (And since nobody emailed us to complain, we're not even sure you noticed he was gone).

Friday, October 20
A production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at St. Thomas this evening updates the play to the Prohibition-era roaring twenties. Tickets are $6 for students or other connected with St. Thomas and for seniors, and $10 for everyone else. 8 pm @ UST's Jones Hall (not to be confused with the one downtown--this one is at 3910 Yoakum).


Saturday, October 21

Ah, Firefest 2006. What, you haven't been looking forward to this yearly event? You should: the Houston Fire Museum sponsors this free family event to educated about the fire service...oh, and there's a barbeque cookoff, a kid's area, food, vendors, and live music. Bring the neice and nephew your Cancun-bound sister foisted off on you for the weekend from 10 am to 5 pm! (Free, at the fire department's Val Jahnke Training Facility (800 Braniff).

Sunday, October 22
One more family-style activity: The Chronicle presents Family Day @ the Contemporary Arts Museum (which, by the way, is always free.) Entertainment, refreshments, hands-on activities for kids..and did we mention there's art to be seen? (1-4 pm, 5216 Montrose. Free.)

Monday, October 23
On a slightly more serious note, Dr. Sinan Antoon and Dunya Mikhail , two literary scholars from Iraq, will read and lecture at the Rothko Chapel (1409 Sul Ross) today. The program is called Literary Voices from Iraq, and is free, though donations are encouraged. If you've never been to the Rothko Chapel, it's a great excuse to check out one of Houston's most beautiful art installations and meditation spaces, which is the only one of its kind. 7:30 pm.

Tuesday, October 24
Houstonist loves Barnevelder Movement Arts Complex (2201 Preston) for their commitment to providing interesting and innovative dance and performance. Today's no exception, and is a pretty cool oppurtunity to see an open rehearsal of Suchu Dance's new work, "I love mumoo ba* (* not affiliated with mumoo ba)". A reception will begin the proceedings at 7, followed by the rehearsal itself at 7:30 and a post-rehearsal Q and A (with snacks!) at 8:15. Free.

Wednesday, October 25
The Moores School of Music at the University of Houston is holding a series of recitals to commemorate their tenth anniversary. Today's is Happy Birthday Mozart, and features violinist Andrzej Grabiec and Timothy Hester on the fortepiano, which was the instrument Mozart originally wrote his piano sonatas (on the program today) for. $10, or $5 for students and seniors. The performance will be in the Dudley Recital Hall at U of H, at 7:30 pm.

Thursday, October 26
Domy Books (1709 Westheimer) presents a screening of Shaun of the Dead as part of their Thursday Zombie Movie Nights. What can we say, we love this movie. And you can't beat the price with a stick. 9-11 pm. Free.
