River Oaks Theater turns 67 years old next month, and to celebrate, they are throwing two parties and inviting everyone. Landmark Theaters, who owns the property, will feature two nights of double features. All four movies were filmed (at least in part) in Houston and the surrounding areas:
Monday, October 30th, 7 p.m.: The critically acclaimed, off-beat comedy Rushmore with Bill Murray (filmed mostly at St. John's School and Lamar High School), and the now classic Apollo 13 with Tom Hanks.
Monday, November 6th, 7 p.m.: The star-filled tear-jerker Terms of Endearment, written by Larry McMurtry and James Brooks, and the drama-filled 1984 Cannes Film Festival winner Paris, Texas.
The main reason you need to celebrate with the theater is because all proceeds will go towards the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance, the nonprofit organization that's fighting to keep the historic theater (and the surrounding River Oaks Shopping Center and nearby Alabama Theater) alive.
Reservations are strongly suggested, since the films will be shown in the smaller, more intimate screens upstairs. To reserve seats, send an e-mail to GHPA and include the number of people who will be attending. The suggested donation of $20 per person (cash or checks only) will be collected at the theater on the night of the show.

Missed Connections: November 2 - 5

Give me Shelley Duvall's first film, 1970's Brewster McCloud.
On 5 December 1970, a record 23,930 people attended the premiere of the movie at the Houston Astrodome.
dude, rushmore was filmed at st. john's. show the SJSers some love here. Lamar is wher ehe goes when he gets *expelled* from Rushmore (and, indeed, where I went when I got sick of St. John's)
alex
Thanks, Alex, you are currect. It's been a while since I've seen the full movie, but the pieces I saw on cable a couple of weeks ago showed the facade of Lamar, which made me think of that immediately.
My high school (in Pearland) has never been in the movies, as far as I know. However, I do know that the 1981 horror film Student Bodies included a parade scene featured the Pearland High School Band, the funeral scene in Urban Cowboy was shot in South Park Cemetery, and a neighborhood in P-ville was used in Arlington Road.
When did this become about Pearland? Can it, Wilson.
