Cold front brings minor flooding, nice weather

102706_thermometer.jpgSo the cold front passed through last night without causing the heavy rain, high wind and tornadoes forecasters warned about — though there was flooding in some parts of the area, especially to the north and east.

In Tomball, Spring Creek is out of its banks and is expected to crest this afternoon, with about 60 homes reported flooded. Splendora schools are closed today because of a flooded Peach Creek, and flooding has been reported in Creekwood just south of Splendora. And near Porter, the West Fork of the San Jacinto River is expected to crest this afternoon, causing flooding in nearby neighborhoods. The good news is that no major roads are flooded — but if you're already at work, you probably know that by now.

There were some weather-related stories overnight, including a head-on crash in north Harris County that was caused when a driver swerved to avoid driving into high water; people in both cars suffered broken bones. And in southeast Houston, a lightning strike sparked a house fire, but firefighters were able to contain the fire before it destroyed the house.

The plus side of the overnight weather: It brought in cool, dry weather. It's already beautiful outside and should stay that way through the weekend, with highs in the low 70s today (and a potentially stiff north wind), lows near 50 tonight and afternoons in the mid-70s tomorrow and Sunday. Enjoy it!
