Fall weather's here — for now

110206_snowman.jpgBefore we get into this post, we need to acknowledge a couple of things: First, fall tends to come slowly in Houston. Houstonist's rule of thumb has always been that the first really chilly weather comes around the first weekend in November — but sometimes that just doesn't happen. Second thing: Houstonians are wimps when it comes to cold weather. It gets below 80 and we all start digging for our winter clothes, below 70 and we start layering. (Hey, you can't be too careful — just because we've never heard of someone suffering hypothermia at 68 degrees doesn't mean it can't happen.)

With those things in mind, fellow Houstonians, dig our your parkas, mukluks and fur-lined gloves, because according to the forecast, today's high is only going to hit 64, and it could get down to the mid 40s tonight. (FYI, that high is quite a bit less than the record high of 89, set in 1978; the record low, 34, was set in 1991.)

The cool air won't be around all that long, but it will give us a nice Friday and Saturday (highs of 66 and 70, respectively, with plenty of sun) — excellent football weather, we'd say. And if you love warm weather, just wait till next week, when afternoon highs will hover around 80. Ah, fall.
