It’s corn-y, but a-maze-ing! (sorry)

110206_cornmaze.jpgWe now know that a little bit of Iowa is less than an hour away from Houston. Dewberry Farms, located in Brookshire, is trying to bring the farm experience to kids of all ages, offering up a pumpkin patch, farm animals, hayrides, pig races, gemstone mining, and – our favorite – a corn maze.

Every summer, decides on a design and plants its corn accordingly. This year, they are celebrating the now-former Astro Jeff Bagwell’s career. The view from above does look impressive. It looks like you start at his right knee, work up his thigh, circle around his waist, then up his chest … wait, this is starting to give us the creeps.

Just like the snow-maze in The Shining (which we recently learned was really a romantic comedy), the path can become very confusing pretty quick. The farm’s website offers a little scenario on what can happen:

“Cornfusion” abounds after being in the maze a while, the paths begin to look the same and you wish you had brought your compass or GPS! You climb the tall wooden bridges located in the maze to try to see where to go next or where you have been. Your wife, already familiar with your navigational skills, says “You should have asked that nice young corn cop at the last intersection which way to go!” Finally, little Bobby can’t take your bumbling any more and takes command of your band of wanderers with “Follow me!”. You knew that kid had leadership abilities!

All along the maze, there are also clues to help you find your way out. They also keep the maze open on weekend nights – Houstonist likes that option, we’ve always wanted to pretend that we’re in a horror movie.

The maze is open weekends through November 26th. Group reservations are taken during the week. Complete hour listing and pricing is here.
