So there was a weird shooting-turned-SWAT standoff in southwest Houston yesterday, beginning with the murder of a 21-year-old man and ending with a woman in a bathrobe surrendering to police. Meanwhile, the two suspects in the shooting — Domingo Alan Valle, 26, and Billy Joe Whiteside, 30 — remained at large.
The whole thing apparently started around 6 a.m. Wednesday at an apartment complex in the 11500 block of Keegans Ridge Road. Witnesses said they saw 21-year-old Brandon Dean and two other people sitting in Dean's car in the complex parking lot when a Lincoln Navigator pulled up and one or more people got out and started shooting at Dean and the two men. All three of them were hit and Dean died at the scene, according to police; the suspects fled.
But then it got weird: According to reports, police were at the complex around noon when they heard gunfire coming from an apartment where one of the suspects is believed to have lived. Witnesses said a man had fired the shot, but when police tried to communicate with the person in the apartment, they got no answer. So the SWAT team was brought in, and after a four-hour standoff, a woman in a robe came out of the apartment. According to KHOU, she "was allegedly high on something" — when police put her into a patrol car to take her in for questioning, she asked officers, "Why you tripping?" We imagine that was their first question for her, too.
The woman, who police say is Valle's girlfriend, said she accidentally fired her gun, but it's not clear why she stayed holed up in her apartment for hours. It's also not clear what happened to Valle and Whiteside; police say one of them might have been shot and was seen running into the woods after Dean's shooting.
