You never know what's going to happen when you live in the suburbs. If it's proof you want, ask the people in Greenwood Forest, a subdivision off Champions Forest and 1960 where a deer was stuck in a swimming pool Monday afternoon. No kidding.
It apparently began in a back yard in the neighborhood when two bucks got into a fight (it's mating season, so we can imagine what they were tangling over) and ended up breaking a window at someone's house. When the deer realized they'd be in big trouble, they split up, and one of them headed straight for the house with the pool in the back yard. Mike Moreno, a neighbor, saw the deer go running down the street: "I was like, 'What the hell was that?'" he said. He followed the deer and watched it leap over a six-foot fence and straight into the swimming pool. "He was swimming just frantically. gonig around the pool. We thought about trying to take him out," Moreno told KHOU. "The other guy grabbed him by the antlers, but if he gets out there's no where to go."
Parks & Wildlife crews and Precinct 4 constables were eventually able to rope the swimming buck and load him onto a truck. Unfortunately, officials said the deer was in such bad shape after frantically trying to get out of the pool for an hour and a half that they had to euthanize him. Officials said we should expect to see more cases like this — well, maybe not exactly, but you know what they mean — as suburban growth encroaches on the habitat of local wildlife.
