Yesterday, a man in Galveston was jailed for killing a cat with a .22-caliber rifle. That man just also happens to be the founder of the Galveston Ornithological Society.
The shooting happened Wednesday morning near the toll bridge at San Luis Pass. A toll bridge worker heard the shots and determined that they were coming from a white van, driven by bird guide Jim Stevenson.
“I ran over to the edge and looked over and saw the van parked down there and hollered at the man to stop shooting and he panicked and got in his truck and took off,” said Newland.“I told him, I says ‘There he goes John, go get him’,” said toll bridge operator Howard Etzel.
Ten stray cats have been killed in the area within the past year, four of those just within the past week. Newland often takes care of these cats and hopes to have his ashed buried in the area so he can protect the cats after he dies. We're not sure how his wife feels about that.
Stevenson was jailed and charged with animal cruelty. His bond was set at $10,000.
