Big news from the Juice Box! Craig Biggio and Houston Astro's announced a deal today that will keep him an Astro for his 20th season. The single season deal is valued at just over $5 million dollars and will insure that Biggio is an Astro when he reaches 3,000 career hits.
Biggio needs only 70 hits to reach the batting milestone. Houstonist is no mathematician, but we've done some spreadsheet wrangling with the last five seasons worth of Biggio's stats. Based on these caffeinated calculations, and if the flux capacitor functioned properly, Biggio should become Mr. 3000 #27 during the 68th game next season. Already an extra base machine, Biggio should reach the 300 home run plateau by the conclusion of the 2007 season.
With the Biggio deal locked down, recently re-signed GM Tim Purpura can get down to business chasing free agent talent. Eligible players must declare themselves free agents by Saturday's deadline. Ball clubs can begin negotiations on Sunday. Look for the Astros to target Pettite and Clemens and to follow-up with Kip Wells and Gary Matthews, Jr.
Any of those folks would be great additions to the '07 roster given favorable contract terms. But, please, GM Tim, whatever you do, don't sign Sosa!
