Fun For A Hamilton: November 11-17

060906_tenner.jpgCome on, you've got ten bucks to spare. Even we have ten bucks to spare, and nobody pays us. Here's how we'll be spending ours....

Saturday, November 11
The Flamenco Poets Society and Casa Ramirez Folk Art Gallery present Lorca: Poetry & Dance, a billingual reading in Spanish and English with a dance component. Houstonist didn't even know we had a Flamenco Poet's Society, but since we do, this is what we're planning to check out. Tickets are $10, or $5 if you're a student. 7:30 pm @ Casa Ramirez (241 W. 19th)

Sunday, November 12
This is the second day of the Texas Championship PowWow at Trader's Village (7979 N. Eldridge Rd). The festival will feature arts and crafts, dance contests, music, food, and art, including tipi exhibits designed to provide a look at Native American culture both historical and contemporary. The whole thing's free, although parking is $2 per car, and there will be events from 9 am to sundown.

Monday, November 13
Main Street Theater’s Kids On Stage program presents Jungalbook, a modernized, urban version of the Rudyard Kipling story (or, if you must, the Disney movie with "The Bare Necessities" in it. ) Performed by area students ages 8-15, part of an advanced acting class, the show will be at MST's Chelsea Market space (4617 Montrose). Tickets are $5, and curtain's at 7:30.

Tuesday, November 14
A cool local art exhibit going on now is Art By the Square Foot at the Arts Alliance Center in Clear Lake (2000 NASA Parkway, officially in Nassau Bay, TX, if you're Mapquesting). This non-juried exhibit and sale allows artists to rent space by the square foot to display their works, making for an eclectic mix. And who knows? You might find something cool for that pesky spot in the dining room... 10am-6pm Tuesday-Friday and 10-2 on Saturdays. Free.

Wednesday, November 15
Suchu Dance presents one in it's series of Dance Video Nights, allowing Houstonians to experience some of the best work in the groundbreaking "dance for camera" genre. Tonight's is "Blush", wherein a film, "shot by Wim Vandekeybus, in which his dancers are shown swimming with real-life dolphins and running through a cane field, is an integral part of the performance. The dancers, from the stage, dive in and out of the screen as though they were literally joining the dancers in the water, only to reappear on screen or on stage a couple of seconds later". Cool. It's at Barnevelder (2201 Preston), of course, where all manner of cool dance-y things are found. 6:30 pm. Free.

Thursday, November 16
Improv alert! For those who love longform improvisational comedy (SO much harder than the short, game-based kind) as much as we do, come see Massive's Really Big Show at Helios (411 Westheimer), this Thursday and each following one through December 31. Tickets are $10.

Friday, November 17
UniverSoul Circus comes to town. America's only African American owned and operated circus, the group features audience participation and calls themselves "hip hop under the big top". The group's website tells us they've got elephants, lions, all types of jugglers, acrobats, Carribean limbo dancers, are more! Tickets start at $10. They're here through the 23rd, doing 8 shows a week. Check their website for more info, but today's shows are at 10:30 am and 7:30 pm.
