Things apparently got a little too hot during the singer-songwriter night at a Montrose bar last night: About 50 people had to evacuate Chances when an air-conditioning unit caught fire just before 10 p.m. According to reports, it took everybody a while to figure out exactly what was going on:
"We were all like, 'Where is the smoke coming from?' when our performer looked up from the stage and said she saw flames," said Mandy Daniels, a bartender.
We can imagine what happened then: The performer shouted, "The roof is on fire!" and ... oh, never mind. Everyone rushed out of the building and firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke in the club; according to KTRK, they managed to contain the fire, but not before it caused some pretty significant damage. "Everyone had evacuated the building when we pulled up and the crews made an interior attack, knocking down the fire," HFD Senior Capt. Chris Chavez said. "It was mostly contained to the ceiling, but there is heavy damage to the structure."
No one was injured.
