Stop at The Spot Club

20061115_lonestar.jpgHoustonist loves a good dive bar because we're broke and not that classy, but mainly we're broke. The Spot Club fits the bill with cheap suds, plenty of character and live music.

Located in picturesque Lazybrook Shopping Center, The Spot just celebrated it's 20th Anniversary. It has no doubt made it through the lean times based on patronage of the regulars, like Ray, who were probably installed as a package deal with the barstools. Fret not, young and hipper-than-thou, the regular crowd may be pushing 60, but they can party and throw back more drinks than a widow at an Irish funeral.

Jan keeps the beer and cocktails flowing for the evening crowd. She's been in the service industry since beer was invented and at Spot for almost as long. It shows. She can mix a drink faster than a blender, always remembers our order (Lone Star) and is quick with a joke. Get her to tell you the one about the dairy farmer handshake. Jan's real a sweetheart, but she doesn't take any shit off of anyone either. Just ask the guy who tried to steal the tip jar last year. He's probably still icing his wedding tackle.

There's more entertainment at Spot besides regulars and Jan. Solid local artists fill the line up for live shows, which typically don't involve a cover. Martha White is a five foot blues spitfire who's voice and guitar playing evokes seasoned blues men of Chicago and New Orleans. White has a regular gig every Thursday and has been known to sit it in on a few sets with other folks, too, like she did last Saturday.

Stop at The Spot tomorrow night for the annual Thanksgiving party. The food's free. The beer is cheap. And, the music is great.
