If you like country music, or sparkly cowboy hats, or large, snorting animals, you're probably like us and can't wait for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. This year, which marks the 75th anniversary of the Rodeo, a total purse of 1.275 million dollars will end up in competitors pockets, making this the biggest-paying event of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association's regular season.
Rodeo officials have also announced four of the performers for this year's festivities: country legend George Strait will open the rodeo on February 27, and Houston's own ZZ Top will close it on March 18th. You'll also see Alan Jackson (March 8th) and up-and-coming new country sensation Sugarland (who are not, sadly, from Sugarland), who will play March 12. (Non-country fans may know the lead singer of Sugarland, Jennifer Nettles, from her duet with Bon Jovi, "Who Says You Can't Go Home", which climbed radio charts earlier this year).
Tickets for individual shows will go on sale when the complete lineup is announced (sometime in January), but RodeoHouston is also offering a new ticket buying option this year, comprised of two nine-performance packages, which include tickets to either the opening night or final concert.
