Regifting and the Art of Closet Maintenance

11202006_car.jpg Oh yes, if only our wealthy Aunt Gert would "re-gift" us a really cool old car! Yep - the words, "fat chance" do come to mind. However, what with Thanksgiving days away (and the decorations already up at most malls - EGAD!) it is now that lovely time of year when you commence buying gifts for the people you care about, the gang's annual "fighting for presents" swaps and the dreaded Secret Santa exchanges. Now, Houstonist is not too ashamed to admit that the dollar store and those handy gift cards at the local filling station will do in an absolute pinch, but, a new gift in wrapping says "I really did think about you, longer than it took me to fill up the urban assault vehicle". Now, we have a new "gift weapon" to add to our arsenal, thanks to Houston-based Money Management International - regifting (which we have engaged in) has now been defined. Who knew there were rules? We suppose this saves us the embarassment of giving Eric the same, now-opened CD for Christmas we got for our birthday.

Click here to enter the site, share a re-gifting story (which enters you in a contest!) and find a guide to re-gifting etiquette (as in, if you have to dust it - donate it - it's not a feasible gift). However, Houstonist has a "White Elephant" swap we attend annually, and it is to seriously give away something almost hideous or terribly funny, dust, warts and all - that is cause to toss the rules out the window.

Why would you re-gift? Isn't that just cheap? Nope, it's not even tasteless or tacky. This is one budget savvy way of getting rid of the 6 martini shakers you aquired from your thoughtful friends who overheard you say that you adore a good dirty, dirty martini. So, when you receive duplicates or items that do not quite fit your "early garage sale" sense of personal style, put them in a closet for future use and be sure to keep notes on the original giver, so as not to offend (unless there is a brilliant sense of humor involved and the regifting becomes a bit of a game!).
