Ah, December, the lights, the sparklies, the much-overplayed muzak carols, the incessant pressure to decorate and provide gifts to friends and family, the parties and food and drink. Houstonist actually loves the holidays - really (yes, that's Freddie and Flaco your hear, performing Frosty the Snowman, when we drive past you). It's time for the 6th Annual Buffalo Bayou ArtPark ("BBAP") XMAS Tree Show!! The tree projects, created by eight artists and one artist collective have been installed around Fish Plaza at the Wortham Theater Center, located at 501 Texas Avenue.
In addition to the tree project, BBAP has also placed five artists in Houston area schools to teach in the After School Initiative program, which is part of the Cooperative for After School Enrichment, a division of the Harris county Department of Educaction. The artists are working with students to create tree projects such as large-scale photos and tiny knitted trees.
Artists involved include Iris Sanchez Benavides, David Chien, Tara Conley, Woody Golden, Barna Kantor, Ryan Kirk, Knitta, David Ubias (The Giving Tree sketch pictured above is his work), and Richard Wall. Artists participating in the after school projects include David Graeve, Krystal Akridge, Joel Bender, Mathew Glover and Valda Rickman.
December 8th is kid's day and the students participating in the program will install their projects and tour art downtown - may be a nice day to take your sack lunch to Fish Plaza. A reception featuring music, entertainment and our favorite winter treat, hot chocolate will be held December 16th. The project will be on display through January 13, 2007.
